About me

I was born and grew up in the North West of England, went to University in Manchester, and then worked as an English teacher in Japan, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia before emigrating to Canada. Iʼve worked at the University of Victoria for over thirty years, first as an ESL teacher and materials designer, and since the late 1990s as a computer programmer in the Humanities Computing and Media Centre, where I work mostly on digital editions of historical and literary texts, dictionaries of Indigenous languages, and other research projects.

For fun, I cycle, play guitar, grow vegetables, and study Japanese.
